A Street Food Dinner, Friday, July 22

We’re delighted to announce the menu for our July 22 dinner, dedicated to some of our favourite all-vegetarian street foods from India. We’ll start with murukku chaat—twin spirals of crunchy, deep-fried chickpea and rice flour, sandwiching slices of perfect summer tomatoes drizzled with a verdant and spicy mint and cucumber chutney. Next up is a Mumbai classic, pav bhaji: soft white rolls split and griddle-fried in ghee and served with a piquant tomato and chickpea curry. After which there’ll be pani puri, crisp fried balloons of dough which we fill with a fava bean purée and serve with a little beaker of refreshing jal jeera—so you can top up each puri with the cool, spicy juice and pop it whole into your mouth. The main event is a soft-boiled egg which we fry in a batter of chickpea flour and thinly sliced onions and serve on a bed of buttery, braised spinach. And don’t forget dessert: we can hardly wait for cherry season just so we can make our cherry kulfi with crumbled almond nankhatai—a sweet and tart molded ice cream served with crumbled Indian shortbread cookies.
